Across athletics and sports, there is a need for more racial diversity in training, management, and especially coaching positions. Only five out of 32 head coaches in the NFL are African-American. In Major League Baseball, only 20% of managers are people of color. Even in the NBA, where 83% of the players are athletes of color, only 30% of the head coaches are people of color (Power, 2020).

In honor of Black History Month, we’d like to recognize five African-Americans who have overcome racial glass ceilings in coaching and management to become trailblazers for today’s athletes and coaches.
